Things you need to start

Basic things you need to start a small vegetable garden
Starting a vegetable garden doesn’t require a lot of tools or expensive setup. In fact, you can begin with just a few simple things. As a beginner, it’s best to keep everything easy and manageable.
Here are the basic essentials to get you started:
Pots or Containers
You don’t need a big garden to grow your own vegetables. A few pots are enough to begin. Pots are perfect for beginners because they are easy to move and take care of.
- You can use terracotta or plastic pots
- Make sure they have drainage holes at the bottom
- Start with 2–3 medium sized pots
I started with two plastic pots from Bunnings — nothing fancy, just basic ones from the garden section. They worked perfectly.
Good Quality Potting Mix
Soil is the foundation of your plants, so it’s important to start with the right one.
- Use a good quality potting mix from your local nursery
- It should be loose and well draining
- Avoid using heavy garden soil in pots
I use Osmocote potting mix — it already contains slow release fertilizer, so your plants get a steady supply of nutrients without any extra effort in the early weeks. A healthy potting mix makes a real difference right from the start.
Seeds or Seedlings
You can choose to start with either seeds or small plants (seedlings). Seedlings are easier and faster for beginners Seeds are more economical and rewarding Start with easy plants like herbs (mint, basil), leafy greens, or tomatoes.
Small Watering Can
Watering your plants gently is very important, especially in the early stages. I recommend to use a small watering can with a soft flow, avoid pouring water too quickly or heavily This helps protect delicate seedlings and keeps the soil in place.
Gardening Gloves (Optional but Helpful)
Gloves are not a must, but they can make gardening more comfortable. Protect your hands from dirt and insects. They are useful when handling soil or plants.
Basic Gardening Tools
You don’t need a full set of tools, just a couple of simple ones: A small hand trowel for planting and a hand fork for loosening soil These basic tools make planting and soil preparation much easier.
A Sunny Spot
Choose a spot with 5–6 hours of sunlight It could be a backyard, balcony, or even a sunny window Good sunlight makes a big difference in plant growth.
Keep It Simple
You don’t need everything at once. Start with the basics and add more as you go. Even with just 2 pots, potting mix, a couple of plants and a small hand trowel you can begin your gardening journey.
Closing Thoughts
Gardening is not about having the perfect setup. It’s about starting small, learning along the way, and enjoying the process. Just begin and let your garden grow with you.
